Hard Drive To Global Growth For Canadian Data Recovery Pioneers

It started 10 years ago as a repair shop for computer hard drives.

Now it is celebrating a decade of evolution into a global network of leading-edge laboratories devoted to data recovery.

Founded and headquartered north of Toronto, it now has nine other locations: Brisbane, Australia; San Diego, Calif.; Armonk, N.Y.; Newcastle, England; Kaiserslautern, Germany; Beijing; Barbados; Ponta Grossa, Brazil; and Singapore.

Its 50 employees claim a daunting range of expertise, with degrees in fields including physics, electrical engineering, computer science, automation control, telecommunications - and psychology.

"As electronic information becomes more intertwined with commerce and our day-to-day activities, the impact of damaged or lost data becomes even more significant. In addition, threats to that data have multiplied tenfold," says CBL president Bill Margeson, who co-founded the company with partner Zhengong Chang.

Adds Alan Freedman, a research manager at consultancy IDC Canada: "As different operating systems and computing platforms continue to evolve and proliferate, the potential scenarios for data damage or loss multiply. CBL Data Recovery Technologies has found a successful niche in understanding these scenarios and has developed tools and strategies to retrieve data from a wide range of storage media for a varied customer base."
